We are delighted to introduce you to one of our Women’s Business School graduates Kirsten Lowis, founder of Let’s Talk Business.
When did you start your business?
I had been investing in property since my early 20’s and launched my first consulting business at 25 and since then I have started, bought and sold my own and hundreds of other businesses since then as a professional business broker.
What was the inspiration behind starting this business?
I was 30 years old when I bought my first business. Straight up, I admit now that it was an emotional decision. I was looking for a solution; an immediate way to create an income that also allowed me to have flexibility and freedom so I could also be an ever-present mother to my young daughter. I was street smart, driven, motivated and passionate about being a business owner, but the truth is I had no idea what I was getting myself into and there was only the school-of-hard-knocks available to learn from. Looking back, I would have done it all differently and excited to be able to share my knowledge and experience with others through my training courses.
What are you most excited about in your business?
Teaching people the “How To’s” of business through my courses. It’s about getting them prepared and empowered, because owning a business can be the best professional decision anyone can make. I mean, what other vehicle is available where you can control your own destiny, experience enormous independence and personal growth, build equity, work or employ like-minded people and get paid for doing it? There is simply nothing better! Not a home, not real estate, not the stock market; nothing compares to being a business owner!
What has been the most challenging thing about starting your business?
Accepting that the overnight success I had been chasing took a decade of working my ass off through stress, adversity, doubt and fear. But, it was all worth it to get to this incredibly successful and rewarding stage of my life and business.
What advice would you give to other women thinking about starting a business?
Over 90% of the people who go into businesses have never owned one or had any training on how to own a business before. Isn’t that incredible!? My advice is to get educated and be prepared. Join Peace and Katy at the Women’s Business School or take up one of my courses that teach you the “How to’s” on every aspect of business – from starting or buying to selling or closing… Know what you’re up against. (shameless little plug in there!)
Why did you choose to do the Women’s Business School Programs?
I was needing some help and guidance on how to transition my business courses to an online platform, and I was also looking for a mentor outside of my local region – someone who I could connect with on a high level and brainstorm my ideas.
What did you enjoy the most about being part of the program?
The course forced me to keep working ON my business planning and moving forward through the uncertainty of 2020. It gave me a sense of purpose when everything felt topsy-turvy.
What surprised you most about the program?
Having so many active participants in the program was more inspiring than surprising. I loved that so many women made the decision to invest in themselves.
Which module was the most helpful and why?
The first module was really the best for me as it made me sit down and really set out a plan of action, however it was developed pre-Covid. By the end of the course, the entire plan changed in a surprisingly positive way.
How did the program help you in your business?
I had an incredible mentor throughout the course – it was a perfect match. We didn’t talk often, but when we did, she left me with a hunger to take more care of myself so that I could achieve my goals.
What has been the best thing about starting your own business?
The best thing by far is the sense of accomplishment and having such a diverse knowledge and understanding of business. This has allowed me to create a unique training program that allows me to transfer vital knowledge to other business-minded people.
Would you recommend the Women’s Business School to other women starting a business? Why?
Absolutely, 100%. The most important investment any start-up can make is to invest in their knowledge of business and people. The course is simple and achievable, the community is inspiring, and the mentoring is invaluable.
What’s happening next in your business?
I will be taking all of my training courses online this July. Eeek! Currently, there is no other product on the market like my 6-part series on “How To” start, buy, grow, value, sell or close a business.
What are your big plans for the future?
To help small business owners by collaborating with other networks and organisations who want to join me on a global mission “to educate, empower and prepare small business owners for anything and everything”.
