We are delight to introduce you to one of our Women’s Business School graduates Claire Hoffman, founder of Undertaking Grace

Meet Claire

My name is Claire Hoffman and I have started a foundation called Undertaking Grace.  We provide death literacy, end of life care, home vigils, funeral support and bereavement care.

When did you start your business?

Formally in May 2019

What was the inspiration behind starting this business?

I have been interested in palliative care and death midwifery for a number of years now.  However it wasn’t until the sudden death of my husband that the wheels in this direction started turning.  I realised how much more cathartic and powerful ceremony can be if you take matters into your own hands.  I didn’t even think, I just knew when Garryn died that I wanted to look after him in death and not allow someone else to do it.

What are you most excited about in your business?

Serving my community.

What has been the most challenging thing about starting your business?

Getting the word out.  I have found it very hard to be found online and even promoting what I do in our local community.

What advice would you give to other women thinking about starting a business?

If you want it, do it.  My motto has always been Victory First, Practicalities Later…. *laugh*

Why did you choose to do the Women’s Business School Programs?

I was hoping that it would give me the tools to give me the exposure I am needing for the business to thrive.

What did you enjoy the most about being part of the program?

Meeting Rosina, my mentor.

What surprised you most about the program?

The level of work involved.

Which module was the most helpful and why?

The mentoring program because it gave me someone to be accountable to.

How did the program help you in your business?

Understanding the importance of networks and connections far and wide.

What has been the best thing about starting your own business?

It allows me to do something that my heart is called to do.

Would you recommend the Women’s Business School to other women starting a business? Why?

Sure, I think it is really helpful knowing there is a community of women all trying to make change in their lives.  It allows you to celebrate each others wins and acknowledge all of the challenges together.

What’s happening next in your business?

I am hoping to launch our workbook ‘Don’t Die Without Me’ into the big wide world and have people embrace it, not shy away from it!  It is such a difficult subject to promote.

What are your big plans for the future?

My big goal is that in every community there is someone who works with death in a way that brings back the ritual and ceremony surrounding death.  This kind of ritual and ceremony builds a bridge between death and bereavement.  it is such important work supporting the deceased and those left behind.
